Our Adjusting Instrument: The Impulse iQ

What it is

The Impulse iQ is a small, hand-held, FDA-registered chiropractic instrument made by Neuromechanical Innovations. Instead of the hands-on thrust of a manual adjustment, it delivers a quick, controlled impulse to a joint through a small rubber-tipped stylus. It has three force settings and can deliver a single impulse or a series of them. The iQ model includes a built-in sensor and microprocessor that measure how the joint and surrounding tissue respond, so the instrument can adjust its thrust pattern.

How we use it

We use the Impulse iQ as part of our care for the spine and for joints in the arms and legs. Because it’s an instrument-based technique, there’s no twisting of the spine and typically no popping sound. We choose the area, angle, and force setting for each patient.

Who it may be a good fit for

Because the force is adjustable and the adjustment is gentle, the Impulse iQ is often a good option for patients who may not be comfortable with, or suited to, manual adjustments, including:

  • Older adults: A lower-force approach can be easier on joints that have become stiffer or more sensitive with age.
  • Patients with osteoporosis or reduced bone density: Instrument adjustments use controlled, low force and avoid twisting the spine. We review your history and any imaging before deciding on the right approach.
  • Children: The small stylus and adjustable force settings allow us to use a very light touch for pediatric patients.
  • Pregnant patients: The instrument lets us adjust without twisting or positioning that may be uncomfortable during pregnancy.
  • Anyone who is nervous about adjustments
